Every project tells a story, but some stories are woven directly into the design itself.
When Ventures approached me about collaborating on this basement renovation, they already had a strong vision in mind. The homeowners wanted a space inspired by two things they love: spending time in downtown Plymouth and gathering with family and friends. Our role at KSI was to help bring that vision to life through thoughtful cabinetry design and appliance selection that would make the space both beautiful and highly functional.
The result is a one-of-a-kind lower level featuring a speakeasy-inspired bar, a compact secondary kitchen, a contemporary full bath, and several personal touches that celebrate the family's connection to their community.
One of my favorite aspects of this project is how personal it feels.
The homeowners are big fans of The Ebenezer, a beloved gathering spot in downtown Plymouth, which inspired the overall speakeasy aesthetic. That influence appears throughout the design, including a custom engraved plaque bearing The Ebenezer name.
The family's love of theater also found its way into the space. A stage area was created for their child, who participates in theater and dance. Flanking the stage are signs referencing Plymouth's historic Penn Theatre, adding another meaningful connection to the community they love.
These details elevate the project beyond a typical basement renovation. They create a space that feels uniquely theirs—one that reflects their interests, memories, and lifestyle.
Ventures came to us with a clear design direction: dark, moody, sophisticated, and built for entertaining.
Together, we selected Dura Supreme cabinetry, finding a door style that paired beautifully with paneling selected for the space, and developed the finishes that would help achieve the dramatic atmosphere they envisioned. The graphite finish on the cabinetry, warm brass accents, and illuminated ceiling details all work together to create a space that feels both luxurious and inviting.

"When we originally met with the clients they had a really strong influence from having a Speakeasy type feel. We came into KSI and really had them help us develop the final details, colors, finishes, and really bring it all together."
For me, that collaborative process was one of the highlights of the project. Ventures had a strong design vision, and our role was helping refine the details, coordinate the selections, and ensure everything worked seamlessly together.
The centerpiece of the lower level is the stunning entertainment bar.
This space was designed to do far more than simply look beautiful. It needed to function effortlessly when hosting anything from family gatherings and celebrations to game-day get-togethers.
The large island provides generous seating and serving space, while integrated beverage refrigerators, hidden storage solutions, and abundant countertop space make entertaining easy. Upper cabinetry keeps glassware and entertaining essentials organized and close at hand, while the adjacent wine room adds another layer of visual impact and functionality.
Every element was designed around how the homeowners would actually use the space.
The result is an environment that encourages people to gather, relax, and spend time together.
While the bar draws most of the attention, one of the most impressive aspects of this project is tucked just around the corner.
Adjacent to the entertainment area is a compact secondary kitchen that also serves as the home's laundry space. Within a footprint measuring roughly 10 feet by 7 feet, we needed to incorporate a refrigerator, range, dishwasher, sink, washer, dryer, and storage – while still maintaining access to important mechanical components.
Finding room for everything required careful planning and precise appliance selection.
Rather than using standard appliance sizes throughout the space, we evaluated every appliance individually to ensure proper clearances, functionality, and access. The dimensions of the refrigerator, dishwasher, and range became especially important as we worked around the sump pump area and other constraints.
Thoughtful appliance selection allowed us to maximize every inch of available space without sacrificing functionality.
The finished kitchen provides everything needed to support entertaining while still handling the practical day-to-day needs of the household.
The lower level also includes a contemporary full bathroom designed to feel calm, clean, and welcoming.
The homeowners were drawn to a spa-inspired aesthetic, and we worked together to select cabinetry finishes, door styles, and materials that would support that vision. Warm wood tones, clean lines, and integrated lighting create a relaxing environment that complements the darker, more dramatic character of the entertainment spaces nearby.
The bathroom serves as another example of how thoughtful cabinetry design can enhance both the beauty and functionality of a space.
Projects like this highlight the value of bringing builders, designers, and homeowners together early in the process.
