# Designing a Dark & Moody Barndominium in Rochester Hills

When builder Miles Volpe of Benchmark Homes invited me to collaborate on this a barndominium in Rochester Hills, I knew right away it was going to be something special!

Barndominiums are still a newer concept in Southeast Michigan, but they’re gaining momentum for good reason. This home perfectly showcases how thoughtful cabinetry design can ground a soaring structure and transform it into a warm, highly functional living space.

## What Is a Barndominium – And Who Is It For?

A barndominium blends the structure of a barn – often featuring metal siding, expansive rooflines, and oversized garages — with the comfort and finish of a modern home.

Traditionally, barndominiums have been popular in rural areas, where homeowners want acreage, workshop space, and a durable structure. But we’re now seeing them appeal to a different buyer as well:

- Urban entrepreneurs running a home-based business
- Hobbyists who need serious garage or workshop space
- Car collectors or tradespeople
- Homeowners who value efficiency and simplicity in a smaller footprint

This particular home is 1,400 square feet – compact in footprint but expansive vertically. With 14-foot ceilings in every single room – kitchen, bath, primary spaces, and garage – the design challenge wasn’t space. It was scale!

And that’s where cabinetry becomes transformative.

## Grounding 14-Foot Ceilings with Dark & Moody Design

One of the defining elements of this home is the dramatic ceiling height. Fourteen-foot ceilings create openness and airiness – but they can also feel disconnected if not grounded properly.

To anchor the space, I chose deep black cabinetry. Dark cabinetry against tall off-white walls creates visual weight and balance. It pulls your eye down just enough to make the room feel intentional and cohesive.

We’re seeing a significant uptick in the Dark & Moody trend. Many homeowners worry that dark cabinetry will make a space feel smaller – but in reality, it does the opposite. It creates warmth. It evokes coziness. It makes the space feel like it’s wrapping around you.

In this home, the combination of dark cabinetry, abundant natural light, and soaring ceilings proves that dark doesn’t mean heavy – it means grounded.

## Slim Shaker + Farmhouse Details

At the time of this project, Dura Supreme was the only manufacturer offering the slim shaker door profile I wanted. That narrower rail gives a more modern, tailored look.

To subtly nod to the barndominium’s farmhouse roots, I added:

- Wide V-groove paneling on cabinet sides for a beadboard feel
- A custom wood hood flanked by gold mesh cabinet doors
- Consistent gold hardware throughout

Black and gold is simply timeless. Gold warms up black in a way that chrome or polished nickel just doesn’t. We carried that gold detail through lighting, faucets, bath fixtures, and cabinetry hardware to create full-home cohesion.

## Seamless Design: Panel-Ready Appliances & Clean Lines

Because the home is modest in square footage, visual flow was critical.

Instead of breaking up the cabinetry with stainless steel appliances, we specified:

- A panel-ready refrigerator
- A panel-ready dishwasher
- A concealed appliance garage

From the island view, everything is clean and continuous. This level of detail requires coordination – appliances must be selected early, panels specified correctly, and installers aligned with the design intent. That collaboration is part of what we pride ourselves on at KSI.

When done correctly, a paneled refrigerator reads like a pantry cabinet – seamless and sophisticated.

## Functionality That Works as Hard as the Homeowner

Design is beautiful – but it must function.

This kitchen features a Ruvati workstation sink – one I personally use in my own home. If a kitchen sink were a multi-tool, this would be it!

- 16-gauge stainless steel construction
- Integrated lip system for accessories
- Walnut cutting board
- Drying rack
- Strainer
- Bottom grid

You can prep, wash, dry, hide dishes, or even fill it with ice for entertaining. It adapts to the homeowner’s lifestyle.

We also incorporated Dura Supreme’s metal drip edge on the pull-out trash cabinet – specified in gold to match the rest of the home. The trash and sink areas get the most use (and moisture exposure). That drip edge protects the cabinetry finish long-term while adding another subtle design detail.

## Cohesion Beyond the Kitchen

One of my priorities in this home was consistency.

The dark cabinetry and gold accents continue into the bathrooms. In the mudroom, we introduced a complementary green cabinetry tone – still grounded, still warm, still cohesive.

Even though the structure feels industrial in scale, the cabinetry brings softness and intentionality to every space.

That’s what transforms a barndominium from a “barn-inspired structure” into a refined, high-end home.
