Top 3 Considerations when Choosing Tile for your Bathroom

Written by Brooke Dando | Aug 8, 2024 7:41:30 PM

Tile can be overwhelming when it comes to clients selecting for their space. It’s such an integral part of a bathroom, it’s probably the biggest thing to select! However, focusing on three key considerations— shape, style, and size — can simplify the process and help you make a choice that will enhance your bathroom’s design and functionality.

1. Shape

Tiles come in a multitude of shapes, each bringing its unique aesthetic to your bathroom. From bold geometric shapes like hexagons and triangles to more traditional forms like squares and rectangles, the shape you choose can significantly influence the overall look of your space. Geometric shapes can create a modern, dynamic feel, while classic shapes can offer a timeless appeal. Consider how each shape might complement other elements in your bathroom, such as fixtures and cabinetry.

2. Style

Tile comes in a wide variety of styles, finishes, colors. Prior to your design consultation, you can gather inspiration and look at tile online or in a tile showroom to see what’s out there and what’s current. As a designer, when I meet with a new client, I like to start simple: let’s talk about two things first. Do we want an organic feel or clean, angular, straight lines?

  • Organic Style: Soft lines and edges characterize an organic style, often featuring floral patterns or natural textures. This style can create a calming, spa-like atmosphere.
  • Angular Style: Tiles with strong geometric patterns and straight lines fall under this category. Perfect for achieving a sleek, contemporary look!

From there, we explore colors and finishes.  Whether you want a calming spa-like retreat with neutral tones, soft blues and greens, or a statement space with rich, dramatic tones, the right color can transform your bathroom. Mixing tile with gloss, matte, and brushed finishes can create exciting points of interest between shower niches, flooring, and more. Understanding and exploring these stylistic directions can guide you towards tiles that reflect your vision for the space.

3. Size

For tile size, the options are limitless! Do we want 12”x24”, 48”x48” or maybe a full sheet of porcelain? Maybe we want small tile to fit the charm of a smaller space. When thinking about tile size, we want to consider grout lines, cleaning, and the size of your overall space.

  • Grout Lines: Many people don’t want to see a lot of grout lines, for both a cleaner aesthetic and a bathroom that is easier to clean! The practicality of fewer grout lines has made larger tile popular today.
  • Tile Dimensions: Popular sizes include 12”x24” and larger 48”x48”, which can work well for both floors and shower walls. For a historic or retro vibe, smaller tiles like 4”x6” or 4”x8” subway tile might be appropriate, especially for smaller spaces and homes built in the 1940s or 1950s.

Working with a Professional Designer

Choosing the right tile is crucial, but it’s just one part of creating a cohesive and stylish bathroom. A professional designer can help you navigate the vast array of options and ensure that your tile choice complements other design elements such as cabinetry, countertops, flooring, and lighting. This holistic approach helps to create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing space.
