The trend of mixing materials in kitchen and bath design has become increasingly popular in 2024. And it's no wonder - a thoughtful combination of textures and colors creates visual interest that adds depth and contrast to today's designs. In a recent remodel, I was able to blend enhanced functionality with mixed materials for cabinetry and countertops in a compelling way!
From underutilized closet to walk-in pantry
When approached by the client for this particular project, their primary goal was a comprehensive kitchen remodel that also involved transforming an underused closet into a hidden walk-in pantry. Recognizing the potential of this space adjacent to the kitchen, we aimed to seamlessly integrate it into the overall design, offering practical storage solutions and enhancing functionality.
The addition of a walk-in pantry not only addressed the need for increased storage but also allowed us to declutter the main kitchen area. Items such as the microwave, beverage fridge, coffee maker, and various baked goods found a designated place, optimizing the kitchen's efficiency and organization.
Multiple finishes on cabinetry and countertops create striking contrast
Embracing the mid-century modern aesthetic, our design philosophy emphasized the use of different materials and colors. The kitchen showcases a harmonious mix of door styles and finishes utilizing Medallion Cabinetry's slim shaker door Apollo painted in a light Chai Latte finish around the perimeter, with Pioneer Cabinetry’s Winchester slab door in a warm mocha stain on cherry to make up the island. Complementing these are dusky emerald wall tiles from Platform Surfaces, a Metro Slate brushed quartz countertop from Envi, and a custom 2” thick, edge grain cherry wrap-around island table with waterfall ends by Grothouse, each contributing to a layered visual appeal.
Tiered waterfall countertops and concealed dishwasher create a striking appearance
Several distinctive design elements elevated the kitchen's functionality and style. One of the standout features was the waterfall countertop design on the island, which not only added a sophisticated, modern touch but also enhanced the perception of depth.
We concealed the dishwasher with a seamlessly integrated door panel which allows the island to make a statement without being visually interrupted by the appliance. This not only maintained a cohesive look but also highlighted the island's beautiful wood character, making it a focal point of the space!
By embracing mixed materials and thoughtful functionality, this project exemplified the marriage of practicality and aesthetics - transforming this kitchen and walk-in pantry into a useful and timeless living space for my clients to enjoy!
