From Dated to Dramatic: A Spa-Like Master Bath Designed to Unwind

Some bathrooms feel like part of the house. Others feel like a place you go to get ready.

And then there are the ones that feel like an escape.

That was the goal for this master bath – transforming a large, outdated space into something more intentional, more personal, and ultimately more relaxing.

The Before: Big Space, Limited Purpose

When I first saw the space, it had all the hallmarks of a 90s design – oversized features, expansive tile, and a layout that didn’t quite support how the homeowners wanted to live.

The built-in tub beneath the skylight dominated the room. The vanity was long but lacked meaningful storage. And while the space was bright, it didn’t feel balanced or inviting.

There was plenty of square footage – but not a lot of intention.

The Vision: Bold, Moody, and Personal

From the beginning, my clients wanted something different.

They were drawn to a statement wallpaper – deep green with bold orange lines – that would bring personality and drama into the space. That became our anchor.

From there, every element was about balance:

  • Dark, grounding cabinetry
  • Warm, natural tones underfoot
  • Calming tile in the bath and shower

The goal was to create a space that felt layered, not overwhelming – and relaxing, not stark.

The After: A Space That Finally Feels Like a Retreat

The transformation completely redefined how the space feels and functions.

A Vanity That Works Beautifully

We replaced the original vanity with black painted shaker cabinetry and added a central tower cabinet between the sinks. This created the storage the space was missing, while also adding height and structure.

Black quartz countertops and matte black hardware keep the look cohesive and grounded – allowing the wallpaper to take center stage.

Warmth That Balances the Drama

To complement the darker elements, we introduced an oak-look tile in a warm caramel tone throughout the floor and into the shower.

The elongated planks help draw the eye through the space, while the color ties directly to the warm accents in the wallpaper.

A Tub Area Designed for Relaxation

One of the most impactful changes was removing the built-in tub.

In its place, a freestanding tub creates a softer, more inviting focal point. The surrounding autumn green tile brings a sense of calm, while the added bench introduces both comfort and function.

What was once bulky and oversized now feels intentional and spa-like.

A Shower That Feels Elevated

The shower continues that same sense of calm, with rich green tile, integrated niches, and matte black fixtures.

It’s simple, but highly refined – designed to feel like a daily escape.

The Result: Intentional, Layered, and Personal

This project wasn’t about making the space bigger – it was about making it better.

Now, every element works together:

  • Bold wallpaper creates personality
  • Warm flooring adds balance
  • Thoughtful storage improves everyday function

And most importantly, it feels like a place to unwind.
