My client had been renovating her home room by room, bringing each space into a clean, modern style. By the time she came to see me at our Northville Design Center, the kitchen was the last room on the first floor left to update. It needed to match everything she had already created.

She came in focused on cabinetry and brought her own inspiration, which is always so helpful. Together we walked the showroom to find ideas that spoke to her. Her vision, combined with seeing finishes in person, set the direction for everything that followed.

## A Kitchen That Hadn’t Caught Up

The original kitchen felt heavy next to the rest of the home. Traditional cherry cabinetry and dark granite countertops wrapped the room, the cooktop sat in the center of the island, and a tall wall oven tower anchored one side. Against the bright new floors and modern furnishings around it, the kitchen was clearly the one space that hadn’t caught up.

The goal was to lighten everything up. Nearly all of her inspiration featured white oak in light stains, so moving from dark to light was a clear priority. We didn’t want to lose all depth, though, so we planned black accents to keep some contrast in the room.

The star of the new kitchen is quartersawn white oak in a soft, light stain from Inspira Cabinetry. Seeing the Inspira display in our Northville showroom helped her visualize the look, and she loved it from the start. It wraps the perimeter and the island, giving the kitchen a warm, natural glow that finally feels at home with the rest of the house.

## Mixing Stain and Paint the Right Way

One of our biggest conversations was how to combine painted and stained cabinetry. We considered the classic approach of stained lowers with painted uppers. In the end we chose to work in blocks of color instead. Most of the kitchen is the light oak, and one entire wall is finished in a bright white, also from Inspira.

Choosing that white was the trickier decision. She wanted an open, airy feel, so we landed on a brighter white that keeps the space fresh. The painted wall, which holds the refrigerator and tall storage, balances the extra room on that side of the kitchen and lets the oak around the perimeter and on the island stand out.

Taj Mahal quartzite ties it all together. Its warm, neutral tones bridge the oak and the white beautifully, running up the wall as a full backsplash and wrapping the island in a waterfall edge.

## Designing Within the Footprint

Before our project began, the homeowners had already installed beautiful new flooring throughout the first floor. That meant the new cabinetry had to keep the exact same footprint, and every new cabinet needed to cover any area the new flooring didn’t reach. It took careful planning, but the result looks completely seamless.

We did make one meaningful change: moving the cooktop off the island and onto the perimeter wall. That opened the door to a slide-in range with a statement hood above, and it improves ventilation as well. The move meant confirming the mechanicals could be relocated, and it was well worth it.

## On-Trend Details with Lasting Appeal

This kitchen is full of on-trend selections that still feel timeless. Mixed metal hardware in matte black and brushed brass adds contrast against both the oak and the white. It also ties in perfectly with the light fixtures the homeowners already had over the island.

In the corner, chunky floating shelves give my client a place to show off pieces she already owned and loves, while the look stays clean and modern. One of my favorite moments is the matte black aluminum-frame glass cabinet. It’s the first part of the kitchen you see when you walk through the front door, so guests are greeted with a beautiful glimpse of the space right away.

## Made for Gathering

For a family that loves to entertain, this layout makes all the difference. With the cooktop gone, the island is now one long, open stretch of quartzite, ready for a spread of appetizers, a buffet for the holidays, or friends pulling up close with a glass of wine while dinner comes together.

The room gives guests plenty to take in, too. The hood wall draws the eye across the kitchen, the floating shelves add a personal touch, and the glass display cabinet adds a little sparkle near the entry.

Best of all, the design doesn’t stop at the kitchen. The dark cabinetry that once divided the kitchen from the living room is now light oak topped with the same quartzite, and the oak continues into the dining area. Kitchen, dining and living spaces now flow together as one cohesive main floor, so whether guests are gathered around the island, lingering at the table or relaxing by the fireplace, everyone stays part of the conversation.
