From Closed-Off to Connected: A Kitchen Designed for Gathering

When homeowners begin considering a kitchen remodel, they're often thinking about more than new cabinetry or countertops. They're thinking about how they want to live in their home. For this project, the goal was to create a kitchen that felt more open, connected, and functional for everyday life.

The original kitchen was relatively small and enclosed. A wall with a single doorway separated it from the formal dining room, while a half-wall divided it from the main living area. The space functioned well enough, but it didn't support the way the homeowners wanted to gather, entertain, and interact with family and guests.

Rather than simply updating finishes, we took a comprehensive approach to reimagining the entire layout.

Opening Up the Heart of the Home

One of the biggest transformations involved removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room. This immediately expanded the visual footprint of the kitchen and allowed the two spaces to work together as one cohesive environment.

We also removed the half-wall that separated the kitchen from the living room. This change dramatically improved sightlines throughout the home and created a much stronger connection between the kitchen and the surrounding living spaces.

In addition, we eliminated the kitchen table area and reallocated that square footage to the kitchen itself. This allowed us to significantly expand the cabinetry and create a much larger, more functional workspace.

The result is a kitchen that feels brighter, larger, and far more welcoming than the original layout.

A New Gathering Space

With the walls removed, we were able to introduce a large island that now serves as the centerpiece of the room.

The island provides generous prep space, casual seating, and a natural gathering place for family and friends. Whether the homeowners are preparing meals, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying a morning coffee, the island has become the hub of activity.

To create visual contrast and add personality, we selected a deep blue finish for the island while keeping the perimeter cabinetry in a soft off-white paint. The combination feels timeless and sophisticated while bringing warmth and character to the space.

The blue backsplash ties the design together beautifully, creating a subtle connection between the island and perimeter cabinetry. A custom wood hood adds another layer of warmth and references the existing hardwood flooring, helping the new kitchen feel integrated with the rest of the home.

Hidden Functionality and Thoughtful Storage

One of the homeowners' highest priorities was finding a way to keep small appliances and coffee-making essentials organized without leaving them permanently on display.

To accomplish this, we incorporated a Dura Supreme cabinet with pocket doors that conceals a dedicated coffee station. When the doors are open, everything is easily accessible. When they're closed, the countertop remains clean and uncluttered.

Throughout the kitchen, we also incorporated a variety of storage solutions designed to make everyday tasks easier. These include a trash pull-out, specialized baking sheet storage, and organizational accessories that maximize the usability of every cabinet.

The island features a workstation sink with an integrated drying rack, providing additional functionality while maintaining a clean, streamlined appearance.

These details may seem small individually, but together they make a meaningful difference in how the kitchen functions every day.

Extending the Design Beyond the Kitchen

We also performed a complete transformation of the laundry room.

What was once a basic utility space became a highly functional laundry and storage area with new cabinetry, a stacked washer and dryer, integrated seating, and dedicated storage solutions.

By carrying thoughtful design principles into adjacent spaces, we were able to create a more cohesive experience throughout the home.

A Complete Remodeling Experience

One aspect of this project that I'm especially proud of is that KSI managed the entire renovation from start to finish.

Because our team handled both the design and installation, the homeowners benefited from a coordinated, white-glove experience throughout the process. From demolition and structural modifications to cabinetry installation and finishing details, every element was carefully planned and executed with the overall vision in mind.

The final result is a home that feels dramatically different from the original layout. More importantly, it now supports the way these homeowners want to live—open, connected, organized, and ready to welcome family and friends.

As a designer, that's always the most rewarding outcome.
