Designing with Intention: How Thoughtful Choices Helped Create a Dream Kitchen on Budget

Every design project has its own story, and this one stands out for the creative collaboration and smart decision-making that brought it to life. My client—a designer herself—came to me with a clear vision: she wanted a lighter, brighter kitchen with more functional storage and a larger island for seating that wouldn’t disrupt the flow of the space. From our first meeting, I knew we were going to build something special together!

Balancing Beauty and Budget

When you’re designing a space that needs to be both beautiful and functional, keeping the investment within a range your client is comfortable with is just as important as nailing the aesthetics. Here’s how we achieved that balance:

Cabinetry: Merillat Masterpiece Martel Door in Cottage Paint; Countertops: French Lace Quartz; Tile: Marazzi Rice Bianco 3x8 in herringbone pattern

1. Mixing Cabinetry Lines for the Best of Both Worlds

We blended Merillat’s Masterpiece and Autograph lines throughout the kitchen. Masterpiece, Merillat’s most customizable option, was used strategically—like on the statement hood—while Autograph cabinetry made up many of the base and wall cabinets. Since both lines offer the same finishes, we were able to maintain a seamless look while keeping costs down.

2. Strategic Cabinet Heights

Originally, we planned for all the cabinets to go to the ceiling. Instead, we adjusted cabinet heights in key areas to reduce cost without compromising on storage or style. This small tweak allowed us to create a layered, visually interesting design and freed up budget for standout features elsewhere.

3. Making Tile a Statement, Not a Splurge

Tile is a great way to bring personality into a space, and in this project, we chose a beautiful, high-end tile—then used it only in the Butler’s pantry as an accent wall. The rest of the kitchen features a more economical backsplash in a herringbone pattern.

Overcoming Design Challenges Creatively

Like any renovation, this one came with a few surprises. We knew there was HVAC behind one wall but weren’t sure how low it would go. Rather than reworking the mechanicals, we opted for a larger starter molding and stacked crown to cover it—turning a potential issue into a seamless design solution. Because we’d already incorporated varied cabinet heights, the change felt intentional.

A Collaboration to Remember

Working with a fellow designer was such a rewarding experience. She had a great eye and came to the table with a strong vision, but she was also open to new ideas. Our collaboration was not only fun—it challenged me to look at the space through her perspective. I’m incredibly proud of what we created together!
