Perched on the shores of Dean Lake in Grand Rapids, MI, this charming summer retreat was ready for a kitchen transformation that would match its stunning surroundings. The homeowners envisioned a space that celebrated the sweeping lake views and fostered an effortless connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Sustainability was equally important, giving us the opportunity to incorporate environmentally responsible materials into the design.
Our solution to open up the space centered on removing the wall that once blocked sightlines to the double-height living room. By opening up the layout, we created a breezy, welcoming feel that’s perfect for gatherings, casual breakfasts, or long summer evenings with family and friends.
With that wall gone, the kitchen naturally expanded in both size and functionality. Most of the cabinetry was moved to the front wall, allowing the design to flow into an L-shaped layout complemented by a spacious island and a built-in dry bar. The result is a modern yet warm and approachable space that supports everyday summer living — whether grabbing a quick bite after a swim or hosting a sunset cocktail hour overlooking the water.
This remodel prioritized light, space, and simplicity. One of the most transformative decisions was reducing the number of upper cabinets to add more windows, flooding the room with natural light and blurring the boundary between indoors and out.
The remaining cabinetry was selected with style and sustainability in mind. Along the perimeter, base cabinets feature an eco-friendly rift-cut oak veneer with a warm stain that feels grounded and organic, echoing the trees outside. Upper cabinets add subtle contrast with a slim shaker style in maple painted a soft white, amplifying the bright, airy mood.
Transitioning to the heart of the kitchen, the island anchors the room visually and functionally. Its euro-style slim shaker doors, painted in a rich blue, give a nod to the lake itself while following a rising trend for deep accent colors that add character yet remain timeless.
Altogether, this three-color palette strikes a sophisticated balance: creamy off-white, warm natural wood, and bold, moody blue. It not only aligns with current design trends but also harmonizes beautifully with the natural colors of the lakeside setting.
The use of eco-veneer, a straight-grain engineered wood, reflects a growing shift toward sustainability. By optimizing how wood is harvested and using less raw material, these cabinets achieve the homeowners’ eco-conscious goals without compromising aesthetics.
One challenge involved the window placement on the kitchen’s front wall. To accommodate the longer run of base cabinets and expand storage and prep space, the window sill needed to be raised slightly. This small architectural change made a significant difference, extending the usable countertop and enhancing the kitchen’s functionality while preserving the bright views of the lake.
With its thoughtful blend of form, function, and forward-thinking design, this lakeside kitchen now serves as both a peaceful escape and the social heart of the summer home. Natural light, warm materials, and an open layout invite family and friends to gather — whether for morning coffee with a sunrise over the lake or relaxed evenings that stretch long past sunset.
