Rustic country rivals the classic white kitchen by incorporating wood, metal, and the small details like color and intricate accents. **![Stempien5593](https://blog.ksikitchens.com/hubfs/Blog_Images/Stempien5593.jpg)** **Wood** Using wood in different areas of your design is a great way to add a rustic element to your kitchen. Reclaimed wood, whether in ceiling beams, a kitchen island, or as an accent to your kitchen cabinetry, is especially popular. It gives the homeowners a unique and environmentally-friendly way to warm up their kitchen and create interest. In the picture above, [KSI Designer Wes Boggs](http://www.ksikitchens.com/wes_boggs.html) uses light hardwood, Sage Coffee Glaze on Alder from [Dura Supreme Cabinetry](http://ksikitchens.com/cabinetry.html), in the kitchen creating a quaint aesthetic. Quartersawn oak, rustic cherry and the finish techniques make the cabinetry too. A distressed finish transforms your expected cabinetry into a custom work of art. Other ideas incorporate reclaimed wood in the range hood, a stand-alone furniture piece, valance, or kitchen table. ![morin0523](https://blog.ksikitchens.com/hubfs/Blog_Images/morin0523.jpg) **Metal** Your country kitchen may be rustic, but that doesn’t mean your appliances should be. For example, a stainless steel double-door refrigerator with freezer drawers offers plenty of storage for food while adding a modern touch to the country kitchen. In the second photo above, I incorporated stainless steel appliances for an updated, fresh appearance. Another example seen below by [KSI Designer Sandra Daubenmeyer](http://ksikitchens.com/sandra_daubenmeyer.html) featuring a stove range hood with metallic bronze accent that modernizes the kitchen’s aesthetics. With the typically light color palette of a country kitchen, adding in bright color accents can give a fun pop to your design. Freshly picked flowers, bold dishware, window treatments, vibrant chair cushions, and bright or white shelving are fun details. Speaking of shelving, try a [kitchen storage plan](http://www.ksikitchens.com/blog/recent-trends-kitchen-storage/) that showcases your dishes on open shelving or in cabinets with glass doors; you can also display unique curios, eclectic antiques, mason jars, and other family heirloom items to add some character to kitchen and reflect your family’s personality.
